EDGE OF GLORY KNIFE SHARPNER * * * - -
CLAIM:
With the Edge of Glory, you can restore your old, dull knives to like-new levels of sharpness in just moments! The secret is the Edge of Glory's dual hardened Tungsten Carbide teeth. Its super-suction base sticks to any surface, and then all you do is swipe any knife through the Edge of Glory. Now you can slice, dice or chop with ease! The Edge of Glory works on all kinds of knives - even serrated blades - and saves you the trouble of having to buy an entirely new set of kitchen knives! So good that it can sharpen a credit card enough to easily cut through a tomatoe in one clean swipe!
RESULTS:
If your knife drawer is anything like mine, it is filled with every shape,style, type and you end up going to just one favorite one, why? because it seems to be the only sharp knife in the house!! I was skepticle purchasing something so small, to do such a big job, however I was pleasantly surprised~
The super suction base, is truly SUPER!! once in the locked position, I couldn't move it, tug it, or pull it off the counter, so off to a good beginning.. Certainly wouldn't want it to loose suction in the middle of sharpening my carving knife!!.. Instructions are very basic, you insert your knife in between the teeth, pull towards you, four times and you are done!!! Upon the first swipe, I noticed black flakes falling onto the counter but after the second third and fourth, there were no more, so I assume it was something to do with the first use! I had to try the credit card, which was white by the way, so black flakes did not come from it that I could tell.. Because the unit is rather small I suggest positioning it more towards the edge of a counter, say one inch from the edge, seems to be a more comfortable range than reaching towards mid countertop and pulling towards your body, but that is just a personal preference. Well, four swipes of the credit card, one fresh ripened tomatoe, and here I go...I will admit it felt a little ackward, not knowing how to initially cut into the tomatoe, if you hold it and press down on an angle, like you would with a regular knife, it didn't pierce the tomatoe, rather bounced off it. The edge of the credit card did feel sharp to the touch, so it was a matter of positioning the card for the cut. I found after several attempts that holding the credit card at an angle much like you do with a pen when writing worked perfectly and OMG it did cut the tomatoe, cleanly, no splatter, no jagged edges so WOW I am impressed!
My next item was my carving knife, which has not had any sharpness to it in years. Being rather long, I stepped about six inches away from the counter top, placed the knife into the teeth and did the four consecutive draws, then cut through a Prime Rib and it cut like butter!!
Okay the final test!! In the infomercial they take a Pineapple, hold it by the crown and chop away in mid air!!! This test failed as far as I am concerned, however in fairness, a bit intimidated, I may not have been using enough precision or strength to get the job done correctly~ Don't have the buff arms like Anthony Sullivan!!!
Although this super suction cup will not move wherever you have placed it, it is best to still apply a finger or two of pressure to the front as you draw your knives back.
FINAL COMMENTS:
I gave this item an overall 3 out of 5 star rating;
1 * for being able to turn a credit card into a knife
1 * for sharpening that old carving knife
1 * for the incredible super suction hold
I tried sharpening every day steak knives, and household scissors and really, saw no difference at all. The larger knives, this did seem to sharpen and quite well, but not enough to drop a tomatoe through and it slices in half, nor acting as a machete for the pineapple! Over all for the price of $10.99 you can't go wrong. It does sharpen well when it works on particular items.. I don't know that there are replacement ceramic teeth replacements, but again, for the price of a couple of Starbucks you could just buy a new one!
